Arsenal have been in this position before.
Under Mikel Arteta's tenure they have proved consistently that they are capable of securing impressive results against difficult opposition.
There were the FA Cup victories over Manchester City and Chelsea last season, the Community Shield victories at the beginning of this one and the Premier League wins over Manchester United and Chelsea again that showed their credentials to turn up in the big games.
Sunday's result at Leicester City was no different as the Gunners were able to secure their first away win against a side in the top three since January 2015.
After falling behind to an early Youri Tielemans strike, Arsenal roared back with goals from David Luiz, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe to secure a statement victory on the road.
What Mikel Arteta's side have been less successful at proving though is their ability to sustain the momentum of such impressive performances.
Back in November their first victory at Old Trafford in 15 years was signalled the start of a two month winless run. More recently a 4-2 victory over Leeds was followed by a disappointing draw with a weak Benfica side and a tepid loss to Manchester City.
The Gunners have always been capable of producing moments of brilliance, but it's consistency that is the key if they are ever to turn good displays into good seasons.
The players themselves know this and speaking after the match at the King Power a typically honest Granit Xhaka was happy to admit that that performance alone would not be enough to get Arsenal to the level where they want to be.
"We have to do it game by game [now]," he said.
"Not for three games, not for four, we have to constantly be like this, with this energy, this team spirit and after I am looking forward to us doing something."
As Arsenal embark on a run of fixtures that could well and truly define this season, as well as the next two or three at the club, it is the much sort after consistency that they must strive for.
Mikel Arteta echoed the sentiments of his midfielder too, but seemed to suggest that his team are getting to a level regularity in their performances that could be the building blocks for something positive going forward.
“The team is clearly improving, it’s taking a direction I like. It’s about consistency,” he said.
“We are still giving things to the opposition – we did it against Benfica and we did it today. It’s something we have to eradicate to give ourselves the best possible chance.
“It’s about how we played against top quality opposition. We have to impose ourselves, it doesn’t matter who we play against, we have to have courage. I’m proud about winning but obviously the way we’ve done it.
“The way we are playing looks much closer to what we want. The way the team is evolving, we have some consistency in recent months.”
After dropping so many points at the beginning of the season there is little room for error at Arsenal right now. Turning the win at Leicester into a consistent run of results is now simply a must.
