Granit Xhaka replies to Jose Mourinho's vaccine plea on Instagram after positive test

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has replied to Jose Mourinho's comment on Instagram which had advised him to get the Covid-19 vaccine and "be safe".

Xhaka, who was sent off in his last appearance for Arsenal against Manchester City, recently tested positive for Covid-19 and was ruled out of Switzerland's game against Greece on Wednesday as a result.

The Swiss FA confirmed Xhaka had been offered a coronavirus vaccine but had decided against having one, with Roma manager Mourinho urging the Arsenal star to change his mind.

Commenting on Xhaka's Instagram Mourinho said: "Get the jab Granit and be safe."

Now the midfielder has responded to the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs boss, saying: "Thank you mister."

Following his absence from Switzerland's match against Greece, which they won 2-1 at St. Jakob Park, Xhaka has also been ruled out of his country's next games against Group C rivals Italy and Northern Ireland.

Swiss football chief Adrian Arnold said: "Granit Xhaka was not vaccinated. He’s a player who isn’t vaccinated. We left this up to each player, it’s a personal decision of each player – just like any other person in Switzerland.

"We have issued a recommendation that everyone vaccinate. But he decided for himself personally. And it is also his right not to be vaccinated."
