Granit Xhaka praises Mikel Arteta 'restart' talks at Arsenal

Granit Xhaka has praised Mikel Arteta for his open communication at Arsenal.

The Swiss midfielder was close to leaving the Gunners in January before being convinced to stay by Arteta.

Xhaka believes a conversation with the former Manchester City No 2 helped him "restart" and he understood what was required of him.

The 27-year-old has endured a difficult season which reached boiling point when he clashed with fans in October.

But since Arteta's arrival he has felt valued and praised many of the new coach's methods.

He told Sport1 : "I think I have had a very good relationship and very good contact with all the coaches here at Arsenal. Everyone has their own character, their own philosophy and also their own way of addressing.

"With Mikel, however, something like a restart actually started for me. I had very good conversations with him right from the start, in which he showed me what he expected of me, how much he needed me in the team and who valued me as a player.

"It was very motivating and convincing for me. With him you immediately notice that he has a very wide-ranging, long-standing know-how that he passes on very well to the team.

"He is absolutely professional, pays great attention to discipline, team spirit, is open and direct in communication. I am convinced that we still have a lot of fun with him."

Xhaka's challenging year began with him being named club captain under Unai Emery.

That decision itself was criticised with the former Arsenal boss holding a players' vote rather than taking the decision himself.

After the midfielder reacted angrily to fans jeering him against Crystal Palace he was subsequently stripped of the armband.

A move to Hertha Berlin looked likely in January before Arteta told the player of his importance and convinced him to remain in north London.
