Granit Xhaka makes surprise injury admission ahead of Arsenal's trip to Watford

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has said that he should be fine after limping out of Switzerland's win over Gibraltar.

The 26-year-old started and registered an assist in the 4-0 Euro 2020 qualification victory, but did not see out the full game after being replaced with just under 15 minutes to go.

It was visible that Xhaka was struggling with some kind of foot problem, but the good news was that he did not require assistance when walking off the pitch.

Xhaka has now surprisingly revealed that he suffered a recurrence of an Achilles problem which has plagued him over the past month, but is optimistic that he won't be facing any time in the treatment room.

"I’ve been suffering from Achilles tendon pain for a few weeks now. I felt it during the game," he said following Switzerland’s win.

"It hurts now, but it should be okay otherwise."

This update from Xhaka will most likely come as a boost for Gunners head coach Unai Emery ahead of this weekend's return to Premier League action.

Arsenal face a Watford side now managed by Quique Sanchez Flores on Sunday afternoon and are aiming to record a first win in three following defeat at Liverpool and a draw with Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.

Xhaka came in for criticism for conceding a penalty in the north London derby, but was defended by Emery afterwards.

"In 90 minutes I am very proud of his work. Some mistakes we can have and I want to use to progress and improve," Emery said. "There are more positive things collectively, individually and also with Xhaka for me.

"The penalty is really one action that is very disappointing. He worked very well. He played very well.

"If we won the match maybe we'd speak about the mistakes less.

"Really there were two mistakes in the first half and they scored two goals.

"We spoke about that in the dressing room and we learned for the second half and after we were continuing getting in their boxes, taking corners and shots.

"We didn't get the efficiency for scoring the third goal but I think we deserved it."

Emery could also have an injury concern with Lucas Torreira, although he's been handed a boost with defender Rob Holding confirming that he's ready for a return to first-team football.
