Granit Xhaka considering shock Arsenal transfer just months after signing deal

Granit Xhaka has admitted he could leave Arsenal because he wants to test himself at the highest level.

The midfielder has made 126 appearances for the Gunners since his £35million move from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.

Xhaka was rewarded with a new long-deal last summer and has been a regular under Unai Emery this season.

However, the 26-year-old has revealed he is considering a shock move away from the Emirates.

Xhaka, who is away on international duty with Switzerland, told Tagblatt: "I’m very ambitious, I want to take the next step, Arsenal does not have to be the last stop."

Gunners boss Unai Emery is likely to take a dim view of Xhaka's comments.

He hailed the Swiss star's decision to commit his future to the north Londoners just last June before he headed off to the World Cup.

Emery said: “I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us. He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more."

Xhaka is expected to start for his country in Saturday's Euro 2020 qualifier in Georgia.

He has featured 32 times for Arsenal so far this season as they battle for a top-four spot and chase Europa League glory.
