Granit Xhaka breaks his silence with message to Arsenal fans after huge mistake in Burnley draw

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has broken his silence after his mistake against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw after a frustrating second half which saw them denied a penalty for handball and denied a goal by a series of blocks and the woodwork.

But Arsenal might not have needed that second goal had they held on to the lead they established after just six minutes when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang danced through the defence before squeezing a shot past Nick Pope at the near post.

That opening goal looked as though it would be the start to a comfortable afternoon but Arsenal were pegged back six minutes before the break.

And the goal couldn't have been much more bizarre. Granit Xhaka attempted to clear the ball from inside his own box, only to cannon the ball against Chris Wood's hip and into the net.

There was little Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal could do as the ball bounced straight into the net from relatively close range, and plenty of criticism has followed following Xhaka's mistake.

But the Swiss midfielder is not running away from his mistake, fronting up to the error on Instagram after the game.

He wrote: "I hold my hands up for their goal and I’m sorry for the mistake. That’s football and right now I feel just as frustrated as all of you.”

Plenty of Arsenal fans sent their messages of support to Xhaka on the back of that post, and one of the midfielder's teammates also replied.

Aubameyang, whose goal was cancelled out by the error, replied to the post, saying 'We move bro' with fist, bicep and heart emojis, so all appears to have been forgiven despite the disappointment at Turf Moor.
