Grangetown primary school hosts Ramadan feast

Families in the Grangetown area of Cardiff came together to share a feast during Ramadan.

The iftar event was held at St Paul's Primary School on Friday, May 24, and families from the area attended and brought along food to be shared out.

Iftar meals see Muslims observing Ramadan break their daily fast after not eating or drinking between sunrise and sunset.

The event was organised by the school deputy head Christopher Gascoigne, 50.  “We are a Christian church school celebrating other communities and celebrating faith which is what we have in common,” he said.

Lots of food was shared and prayers were also said within the school.

Parish priest Father David Morris, 33, a school governor, said the event was "really inspiring” while local councillor Lynda Thorne also attended what was her second iftar meal, which she said she really enjoyed.

She said:  “The Muslim community needs to be congratulated for opening up their iftar party for people of all religions and none. Events like this help us to respect each other’s religion rather than fear it. People fear each other’s religion. We need to celebrate together.”

The event was popular and was attended by almost all the Muslim parents and families of children within the school and will  most likely occur again next year to celebrate the diversity of faith within the school.
