Grangetown community residents come together to provide lunches to families in need throughout summer

Local residents have come together to provide free, healthy lunches to families in Grangetown throughout the summer holidays.

Based outside the new Grange Pavilion, a community centre due to open in the coming weeks, volunteers have been engaging with families who are in need.

Grace Church Cardiff in partnership with Grangetown Community Action have served nearly 400 lunches to families in the area throughout the summer holiday period.

Prior to the pandemic, Grace Church were planning on running lunch clubs through the holidays, however circumstances meant this was not possible.

On realising the potential impact coronavirus has had on finances in households across Grangetown, they have worked with Grangetown Community Action to secure funding to provide the meals free of charge.

Lizzie Swaffield from Grace Church described serving the community as a "pleasure".

"A fantastic team of volunteers have done a great job of preparing and distributing lunches to support local families" she said.

"Working together with Grangetown Community Action and Grange Pavilion this initiative has really helped to support families struggling with food costs at a difficult and uncertain time for many people"

"Its been pleasure to be able to serve the community through Make Lunch Grangetown over the summer holidays".

Councillor Ash Lister, Chair of Grangetown Community Action, is looking forward to developing the scheme for future summer holiday periods.

“Although there is support to prevent families from entering into food poverty, sadly they are not always accessed by those who need them most" he said.

Its been a pleasure to work with volunteers from Grace Church to ensure that those in need receive the support they need, and I look forward to developing the scheme for future holidays.”
