Grangemouth residents woken by 'fireball sky' after mass flaring at INEOS petrochemical plant

Residents in Grangemouth have hit out at petrochemical giant INEOS, over mass flaring last night.

A number of angry locals have taken to social media to blast bosses at the site with one person claiming it was like "sleeping with the bedroom light on".

Pictures posted on Facebook show a massive flare lighting up the sky above, with reports it could be seen from Livingston, which is around 13 miles away from Grangemouth.

People who live near the giant fuel producer say they're sick of noise and light pollution coming from the plant.

They calling for more to be done to reduce disruption to livelihoods.

A spokesperson for INEOS said: "INEOS FPS have been undertaking essential maintenance work at its Kinneil site yesterday Wednesday February, 24 and today Thursday February, 25. As a consequence, spells of controlled elevated flaring have been visible from the site.

We informed the Regulator of the flaring.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our local neighbours and thank them for their patience whilst we complete the work.

We anticipate that the flaring will reduce from later today, Thursday February, 25.
