Grange Hill star Lee McDonald engaged to girlfriend with cheeky Zammo joke

Star of 1990s classic Grange Hill, Lee McDonald, has announced he's engaged to his long-term partner Jess.

The 51-year-old actor, who played Zammo McGuire alongside Ant McParlin and Declan Donnelly back in the day, joked about his character's infamous anti-drugs catchphrase as he shared the happy news.

Posting a picture of himself and Jess posing with her brand new shiny engagement ring, Lee excitedly tweeted: "My partner Jess 'JUST SAID YES'! Wedding next."

His news was met with a flood of messages from friends, fans and co-stars, including EastEnders' Shaun Williamson - who played opposite Lee as bus driver Terry on the soap - who wrote: "Brilliant Lee. Love to you all."

Sean Maguire, who played 'Tegs' Ratcliffe on Grange Hill, tweeted: "Congrats Lee."

Another follower joked: "Congratulations Lee. At least she didn't just say no."

Lee found fame as the heroin-addicted Zammo on the children's soap, but now runs a key-cutting shop in London.

He and Jess have been together for eight years - although they may have to wait a little longer to get married thanks to the coronavirus crisis, which has put a stop to weddings in the next three weeks under a strict government lockdown.

Congratulations, Lee and Jess!
