Grange Hill is being made into a movie as we remember Scottish stars 17 years on

Grange Hill is being made into a movie seventeen years on - and fans who watched the last episode when it was aired in 2008 are getting nostalgic as we remember some of the Scots stars who took part.

The series, set in a fictional comprehensive school, ran as a BBC children's TV series for 30 years from 1978 .

It became a staple diet of schoolchildren and their families ahead of their homework duties and covered a wide spectrum of social issues that made headlines including Zammo's addiction to heroin.

Popular characters included Tucker Jenkins, played by Todd Carty, Benny Green, Zammo McGuire, Justine Dean, and Norman 'Gripper' Stebson as well as Roland Browning played by Erkan Mustafa and Suzanne Ross played by Susan Tully who went on to Eastenders fame,

There were some Scottish born faces in the series too, including Iain Robertson aka Sean Pearce who went on to be Lex in cult Glasgow gang film, Small Faces and has featured in Rab C Nesbitt and Spielberg's Band of Brothers amongst other productions.

Most people will remember the late Michael Sheard who played French teacher and Deputy Headteacher Mr Bronson.

Michael, who passed away in 2005, was from Aberdeen, and also starred as Adolf Hitler in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, Admiral Ozzel in the Star Wars Trilogy and of course as well as strict disciplinarian Mr Bronson, a former Latin teacher who arrived when Grange Hill merged with another school. It wasn’t long before his shout of ‘You Boy!’ became legendary.

Another Scots born actor was John Alford who was originally born in Glasgow, despite his cockney persona.

He played Robbie Wright in 1985 in Grange Hill and featured on the show's "Just Say No" anti-drug single before making the headlines himself as a convicted drug dealer. He also starred on London's Burning.

His and other characters may be resurrected as part of a new plan by Grange Hill creator Phil Redmond, who is also behind Brookside and Hollyoaks.

Phil told The Guardian that he hopes that former actors would be returning for his new project which is a film based on the series.

Phil who has taught in schools, said: "We’ve been through four school-rebuilding programmes in my lifetime, but it’s not about bricks and mortar, it’s about getting the best out of every pupil.

"How will ripping schools out of communities solve anything? Or making catchment areas so big that kids have to travel miles to be with their friends? That's the thesis of the movie: it's decided the school is costing too much to maintain so it should be knocked down, the land sold and proceeds used to build a new one and replenish local coffers.

"I've always had a strand about kids having the same emotions and fears, aspirations and phobias as everybody else. Rather than riots in the dining hall, this time their voices are heard through social media, a rebuttal unit run by the school geek against council propaganda."

Phil met others about the new movie in February and has plans to bring it to life later this year with former cast members from the show in the roles of parents or grandparents.

We can hear the theme tune right now.
