Grandstand, Whateley honoured at AFL media awards

Broadcaster Gerard Whateley won the prestigious Alf Brown Award at this year's AFMA Awards.

ABC broadcaster Gerard Whateley has been recognised for his work, winning several categories at the Australian Football Media Awards (AFMA) in Melbourne.

Whateley won the prestigious Alf Brown award for the second time — he also won in 2015 — for his overall contribution to football coverage.

He hosts ABC Grandstand's Friday night AFL coverage and other matches over the weekend. His win in the Alf Brown Award was recognition for his work with ABC, and for Fox Footy.

ABC Grandstand won the award for most outstanding program for radio / online for its AFL coverage, which includes programs such as Saturday Agenda and the Sunday Session.

The citation read: "In a strong yet diverse field, ABC Grandstand's all-round quality stood out, hitting high notes for depth, relevance and analysis.

"Marshalled superbly by host Gerard Whateley, Grandstand's newsy interviews, topical discussion and thought-provoking commentary proved a winning formula."

Whateley — who also hosts the Offsiders show on ABC television — took out a third award for most outstanding radio caller.
