Grandson running Edinburgh marathon for Parkinson’s UK after grandad diagnosed

A grandson is making the trip to Edinburgh later this year, to take part in the marathon and raise money for Parkinson’s UK - a cause close to his heart.

Adam Bolton, 23, will be taking part in the route on May 28. He chose Parkinson’s UK after his grandfather was diagnosed with the incurable disease at the age of 64.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Adam, from Lancashire, said: “My motivating factor is my grandad.

“Don, now 75, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012 aged only 64. Naturally, with Parkinson’s being prevalent in our family it was a no-brainer to raise money for such a great cause.

“With the great work Parkinson’s UK does and the vast amount of people who support the cause, it’s my hope in the long term that a cure can be found. I want to raise money and awareness for the charity.

Adam, a practice manager of a GP surgery in Clitheroe, said he chose to take part in the Edinburgh Marathon after ‘thoroughly’ enjoying his visits. He said: “My reason for running in Edinburgh specifically is due to my girlfriend, who has been studying in the city for the past four years.

“It’s a great city with so many great people, I’ve massively enjoyed my time when visiting.”

Adam said sourcing funding for Parkinson’s UK is hugely important for treating those with the illness as well as supporting their family. He added: “In the short term, it’s vital that everyone affected by the disease can get all forms of support.

“From my perspective it’s not only the individual that’s affected but their family and loved ones too. The work that carers and nurses have done for both my grandad and our family as a whole has been fantastic and it helps us come to terms with any deterioration we may see.

“I think it’s essential that this level of support is offered and available to all of those affected by Parkinson’s.”
