Grandpa’s Great Escape is set in a small town near London in the 1980s. Grandpa is beginning to forget more and more and Jack is starting to get worried. One night Grandpa goes missing. Jack’s family go searching for him and eventually find him at the top of the church spire. That was where the trouble began…
I think that this book is well researched and the descriptions are good. The battles and planes and RAF ranks are very well researched, as I didn’t know much about the RAF before I read it. The plot can get a bit confusing but it is good nevertheless. Compared to David Walliams’ other books, I think it could be better written because it gets a bit boring towards the end. It isn’t as funny as his other books.
I especially liked the bit at the beginning where Grandpa’s tinned food is described. I also like the lists David Walliams includes in his book. The list about what happens on school trips is funny!
Overall, I think that this is one of the most moving of the books by David Walliams because of Grandpa losing his memory and all the deaths. It helps children understand dementia and death so it is an important book.
