Having read all of David Walliams’ previous books – I enjoyed them all – I knew that I was going to like this book. As expected, I was right and I could not put the book down!
This book is about a twelve year old boy named Jack and his grandfather, who was a famous pilot during the second world war. However, as Grandpa gradually becomes older, he starts to believe that the war is still happening, so he starts calling his grandson ‘Squadron Leader’ and is always devising plans to defeat Hitler.
One day, he disappears from his flat for a whole week and is found in the most unexpected place and at the most unexpected time. But, his condition is becoming worse every day and he is arrested by the police and is downright rude towards them. He is taken to a mysterious old folks home and then it all starts to go wrong.
David Walliams has created a wonderful plot and has really hooked the reader into the story in an engaging tale. The way he writes does not allow the reader to put the book down!
I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of nine due to the sensational way in which the author has tranced the reader into a spell. I also believe that this could be David Walliams’s way of highlighting the issue of care of the elderly as they grow older in our society and suffer from various conditions, thereby would need support from their families and friends.
