Grandmother's light display is so elaborate hundreds turn up to watch the switch-on

For 11 months of the year, Debbie and Marc Turnbull's house looks like an ordinary terraced family home.

But in December, it's transformed into a winter wonderland that draws hundreds of people to their quiet Ashington estate.

Each year, Marc, 47, puts hours of work into transforming the front of their home with the spectacular display, which has become so popular that the switch-on parties attract huge crowds.

But it's not just a simple love of Christmas which drives the couple. The display actually stands as a touching tribute to Debbie's brother Colin Murray, who was killed in 1998 at the age of just 23.

Hundreds of pounds are collected each year from people who pop by to see the lights and donated to the Newbiggin RNLI lifeboat crew, who were first on the scene at Cambois when a freak wave swept Colin out to sea while he was fishing.

Debbie, 47, said: "It is because of the efforts of the RNLI on that night, even though they couldn't save him they made every effort they could for us, so we have been raising money for them since the early 2000s.

"It started off with a few lights on the house, over the years as we've added to it, my husband Marc puts all the lights up himself which takes a lot of planning, hardwork and effort. We've always had a lot of people coming to see the lights so over the last few years we decided to have a switch-on night.

"We bought a Santa suit to dress up and dish out sweets for the children, we sell hotdogs, hot chocolate and cakes.

"I think Colin definitely would be proud of how much we've raised over the years.

"It's nice to know that people show their support for him, that it gets everybody together, it's all good Christmas spirit.

"I know not everybody looks forward to Christmas, for some people it's a sad time, so this is just a nice way of bringing everybody together and doing something fun. It's just magical when you see it all lit up and the kids enjoying it."

Neighbours have come to look forward to the elaborate display, messaging to ask when the switch-on will happen and eagerly following updates on Facebook.

This year was extra-special for carer Debbie and support worker Marc, because they were accompanied by a very special guest in the form of their first grandchild, Keegan.

Born in June, the six-month-old played a key role, pressing the button to switch on the display - even if he had fallen asleep beforehand and needed a little help.

Keegan's mum Casey, 24, who lives with parents Marc and Debbie, and sister Donna, 29, who lives nearby, helped with many of the preparations for the evening, and also joined in the festivities.

Debbie said: "It was very special having our own grandson Keegan to switch on the lights. Every night now Marc takes him out to see the lights and you can see his little face light up."
