A carer was attacked and killed by a pack of wild hogs outside the home of an elderly couple she looked after, police have revealed.
Christine Rollins, 59, was found mauled outside the property in Anahauc, Texas, on Sunday morning.
Officers said her body had 'animal related injuries' and had been drained of blood.
Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorn said the autopsy results listed the cause of death was 'exsanguination due to feral hog assault'.
He said: "There were a lot of things related to the death that didn't add up. Some of it were animal bites.
"My detectives and the criminal investigation team felt like [feral hogs] was what it was but we couldn't come close to announcing until we had the cause of death from the medical examiner's office.
"I don't want to go into detail, but, in my 35 years, I will tell you it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen."
He added that hog assaults are 'very rare' and that the animals had taken over some of the 10 acre property Ms Rollins was on.
"I want to especially send my condolences to the Rollins family. It's unbelievably tragic.
"It looked like she had got out of her car and locked it and she was making her way to the front door when these animals came along," Hawthorne said.
There was speculation that the bites were from five dogs - a Labrador and four corgis - that also lived on the property, however police said the hogs had been causing issues in the area.
According to 12News , the victim was discovered by the 84-year-old homeowner who went outside to look for her as she was late.
Her body was found between her car and the couple's front door.
'She touched the lives of many people around her, young and old,' her grandson Marcus Sandles said to KFDM .
