Grandmother in six-year battle over ‘nightmare’ mouse infestation

An exasperated grandmother says she has been locked in a six-year battle with the rats and mice infesting her home.

Karen Connell claims the tiny pests are regular visitors to her flat, in Princess Parade, Bury, and has even snapped pictures of them.

The 58-year-old lives in the home with her son, his fiance and her 18-month-old grandson but says that the vermin are making her life a "nightmare".

"The mice have been on my food and they put their droppings all over worktops." she said.

"They've chewed through my belongings, they've chewed through cupboards. They've left droppings everywhere."

During Storm Ciara the flat was flooded because something had chewed a hole in part of the wall and through a pipe near the boiler, causing water to flood into the home.

Last year, Ms Connell even bought a snake in an effort to scare the rats and mice away although this does not seem to have worked.

She added: “I’ve tried lots of different methods, poisons, plug-ins that send out a noise meant to drive them away, lots of things, but nothing has helped.”

The property is managed by the housing association Six Town Housing but Ms Connell claims the organisation have not dealt with her vermin problem.

"Six Town Housing know all about this I have taken videos, pictures, pictures of droppings on food, of damage to the property and they've done nothing," she said.

A spokesman for Six Town Housing claimed that Ms Connell had been offered other housing and that staff had tried to deal with the vermin problem.

He said: "We have carried out work to help alleviate the problems that the tenant has reported to us and have provided them with options to exchange their home for another.

"We will continue to work with them to find a property that meets their needs."
