CHENNAI: Grandmaster P Iniyan won the Arandjelovac GM Round Robin 1 tournament held in Serbia which concluded on Friday. The 12-player and 11-round classical competition saw Iniyan score 8.5 points and finish on top. Of the 11 games he played, Iniyan won 7, drew 3 and lost 1.
Iniyan’s wins came against Serbian GM Damljanovic Branko, Bosnian GM Dizdarevic Emir and a crucial victory against IM Sankalp Gupta of India who finished in second place. Players from about 6 countries were participating in the competition.
Iniyan drew against GM Kosic Dragan of Montenegro, Russian IM Makarian Rudik and American FM Acor Corey. The victory gives Iniyan 9.4 ELO rating points and his live-rating is 2555 currently.
Iniyan, a student of PSG College of Arts and Science, is coached by K Visweswaran. Earlier this month, Iniyan had reigned supreme at the La Nucia Open tournament in Spain. In that event, Iniyan had pocketed 7 points with six wins and two draws. In August this year, Iniyan had won the Noisiel International Open tournament in Noisiel, Paris.
During the pandemic, Iniyan had notched up many top-class performances. He became the first Indian to win the annual World Open chess tournament last year and followed that by clinching silver at the 1st FIDE World University online blitz chess in March this year.
