Grandfather who died in Gateshead crash has been named by police as David Turnbull

A man who died following a two-vehicle crash has been named by police.

The crash took place on Sunderland Road, in Felling, Gateshead, at the junction of East Hill Road, on March 8.

Emergency services were called to the area at around 7pm and found that a Vauxhall Corsa, which was travelling west towards Gateshead, had been in collision with a Citroen Berlingo which was heading in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Corsa, a 54-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has now been named by police as David Turnbull, 54.

In a statement, his family paid tribute to the "much-loved father and grandfather".

They said: "Our family and David’s partner are devastated to have lost someone so precious to us all. Not being able to be with him is something that we are finding incredibly difficult to accept.

"David was a much-loved father and grandfather and someone who loved his family. This is a difficult time for us all and would ask for our privacy to be respected."

Mr Turnbull was born in Newcastle but lived in Gateshead.

Following the crash, a female passenger in the Corsa and the male driver of the Berlingo were both taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
