Grandfather re-proposes to his wife after 63 years of marriage after she survives open-heart surgery

An 85-year-old man proposed to his high-school sweetheart again after more than 60 years of marriage to celebrate her surviving open-heart surgery.

Karl Von Schwarz got down on one knee to his 82-year-old wife Donna, who has suffered strokes and a brain bleed before her recent operation.

Before Mrs Von Schwarz went into hospital her husband promised a new engagement ring if she made it through her treatment.

He made good on his word before then kneeling to propose for the second time in front of her family in a department store in Youngstown, Ohio.

Grinning broadly, Mrs Von Schwarz said yes.

Their granddaughter Christina shared footage and photos of the beautiful moment which quickly spread online.

Speaking about the moment, Mr Von Schwarz told WFAA: "It was great because it's a gal that I've loved all of my life.

"It was very easy. You know we've been together so long that we can't stay apart really."

Delighted Mrs Von Schwarz said the ring was “beautiful” and “gorgeous”.

According to reports, the pair married in 1956 and have lived together on the street they grew up in since.

Their granddaughter told WFAA: "I'm just proud that it's as touching to us as it is to everyone else."
