Grandfather avoids jail after pulling out wife's hair in brutal Scots hotel attack

A grandfather has narrowly avoided jail after pulling his wife from a bed and dragging her across the floor.

Karl Sanderson, 57, attended a family wedding with his wife at Langbank’s Gleddoch Hotel and Spa on October 15 and went on to violently assault his partner.

He escaped a prison term at Paisley Sheriff Court and was instead heavily fined as a result of his high income.

Sanderson – who earns around £3,000 per month and has around £750 disposable income – was fined £2,835 for the attack on his wife who he has been in a relationship with for nine years.

Sheriff Suhkwinder Gill slammed his behaviour, stating: “You’re extremely lucky this is your first conviction because, take it from me, had you had a conviction of a domestic nature on your record, it would of been 12 months in custody.

“I hope you’ve learned your lesson.”

Sanderson, of Heaton Road in Bolton, Greater Manchester, had been visiting the area to attend a family wedding.

He admitted to seizing hold of his wife, Joanne Sanderson, by her body and pulling her out of a bed.

He then went on to drag her across the floor by her feet, seize her by her hair and pull out her hair from her head, all to her injury.

Sanderson then went on to trash his hotel room by repeatedly striking crockery, furniture and lamps, causing them to break, and then hit a wall, causing it damage.

Defence agent Mr Malone explained that “this episode was out of character” for the husband, father and grandfather who had no previous convictions.

Mr Malone said: “He accepts his conduct must have caused significant pain to the complainer and that it must have been a horrific episode for her.

“The couple have been married for three years and together for nine years. He hasn’t been in the family home since this incident and he has complied with bail conditions.

“It’s understood his wife wants him back in the family home and he wishes to make amends. He shows sympathy and remorse in relation to this conduct.

“He was only in Scotland for a matter of days to attend a family wedding with his wife which resulted in him being arrested and spending the weekend in custody.

“He is desperate to apologise to his wife and he is fortunate she wishes the relationship to continue.”

Sentencing, Sheriff Gill said: “You’ve come to Scotland, you go to a family wedding, you enjoy that and then you go back to the hotel where you assault your wife by pulling out clumps of her hair, you then go on to trash the hotel.

“That is shameful behaviour.”

Sheriff Gill imposed a fine of £4,000 reduced to £2,660 which attracted a surcharge of £175.

A total fine of £2,835 was ordered to be paid at the rate of £300 per month. In addition, a compensation order of £1,000 to Gleddoch Hotel and Spa was also ordered to be paid.
