Grandad, 101, becomes oldest Brit to beat coronavirus after two weeks in hospital

A 101-year-old man has become the oldest Brit in the UK to beat coronavirus.

Keith Watson was discharged from the Alexandra Hospital in Worcestershire on Wednesday after recovering from the killer bug and has returned to his care home.

The grandfather, from Kidderminster, had tested positive for Covid-19 after going into hospital for an operation on his leg following a fall.

Nurses treating him saw that he'd developed a high temperature before he was officially diagnosed with the disease.

It said: "This is Keith, he's 101 years old.

"He went home today after beating Coronavirus.

"Well done to everyone on Ward 12 at the Alexandra Hospital for looking after Keith so well for the past two weeks!"

It quickly went viral and the battling senior's daughter-in-law admitted he is "bemused" by the reaction to his impressive recovery.

His daughter-in-law Jo Watson, said he is "amazing for his age" but "bemused" by the reaction to his recovery.

She said following a Facebook post from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, "it's all gone a bit mad".

Speaking to BBC Hereford and Worcester, Mrs Watson said the family "were thinking the worst" when he tested positive, but admitted "he's amazing for his age".

"We didn't know anything about this Facebook page until a member of the family had it pop up and it's gone a bit mad.

"He was in hospital having taken a tumble at his care home and needed surgery and that was a big enough ordeal at 101, but he got through that.

"He was showing signs of a temperature and so the hospital took all the precautions, tested him and he came back positive."

She went on to say Mr Watson is recovering well but has complained about his hurt still hurting a little.
