Rockstar North, the studio behind the best-selling Grand Theft Auto games, has announced it is looking for a video games tester.
The Scottish company has produced some of the biggest games in history, including GTA V, and is based out of Edinburgh.
A total of 48 jobs across the UK are currently advertised on the Rockstar site, though the only opening for a game tester is located in Edinburgh.
The job description reads: “A career at Rockstar Games is about being part of a team working on some of the most creatively rewarding and ambitious projects to be found in any entertainment medium.
“Rockstar North are on the lookout for talented Game Testers who are passionate, enthusiastic, and self-motivated, to join our internal QA team. This is a full-time permanent position based out of Rockstar’s unique game development studio in the heart of Edinburgh.”
There’s more to the job than simply playing games, however (as you might imagine). The role requires testers to create “comprehensive test plans” to ensure proper functionality and “concise bug reports” with logs of relevant information.
However, applicants need only have “competent” gaming ability to qualify, as well as an interest in the games industry.
Rockstar is notoriously secretive about its forthcoming projects. A sequel to GTA V (hypothetically titled Grand Theft Auto 6) is widely expected to be in development, but the company has yet to confirm its existence.
Some fans have taken the fact that the studio is hiring a tester as proof that a forthcoming project is in the offing (though it could just pertain to the next-generation GTA V upgrade, out later this year).
While the position of games tester may sound like a dream job for many, Rockstar is one of many high-profile games companies to face criticism in the media for its alleged use of “crunch”.
“Crunch” is the term used in the games industry to refer to an extended period of intense overtime work in the build-up to a game’s release date.
