Grand National-winning jockey David Mullins announces retirement at the age of just 24

Grand National-winning jockey David Mullins has announced his retirement from race-riding at the age of 24.

Mullins, the son of trainer Tom and nephew of Irish champion trainer Willie, won Aintree's world famous race on Rule The World in 2016.

He also rode the runner-up Pleasant Company two years later.

During his short time in the saddle, Mullins won nine Grade 1 races – the top level of the sport.

"It just didn’t fit with what I wanted to do any more, but racing is a tough game to get out of, and I’ve been trying for the last year to 18 months," he said.

Mullins was competing in his first Grand National when Rule The World sprang a 33-1 shock over the unique spruce fences.

His first Grade 1 came aboard Nichols Canyon in the 2015 Morgiana Hurdle and he also had success in the saddle on future dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo.

Mullins, who had 211 winners in Ireland, had his last ride at Naas on January 13.

He now hopes to make a career from bloodstock sales.

Mullins has already had a decent return from one of his purchases, as he sourced eight-time winner Court Maid.

He bought the mare for 1,800 euros and she was last seen finishing a close third at Cheltenham in December.
