Grand National prize money: How much Tiger Roll earned for George Elliot and Michael O'Leary

Tiger Roll won the 2019 Grand National to make history.

The nine-year-old saw Magic of Light to emulate Red Rum in 1974 by winning back-to-back Grand Nationals.

The race is the world’s richest horse race with £1m in total prize money available.

The £1m prize money is split between the top 10 finishers, meaning 25 percent of all the runners receive a financial reward. The winner gets £561,000, which in a race that often sees everyday owners doing well, is a life changing amount for many.

Second takes home just over £200,000, third gets a little over £100,000 and there is £52,700 on offer for fourth and £26,500 for fifth.

The Grand National breakdown:

1st - £561,000

2nd - £211,100

3rd - £105,500

4th - £52,700

5th - £26,500

6th - £13,200

7th - £6,800

8th - £3,600

9th - £2,000

10th - £1,000

The jockeys they will have a fixed fee for every National Hunt race they ride in, which is approximately £169.85. While this may seem insignificant, the leading jockeys generally have arrangements with owners and receive retainer fees for riding their horses.

For example, it was reported McManus used to pay AP McCoy £1m a season to ride in his famous green and gold colours.

As well as the set fee, jockeys also receive a percentage of the prize money. This is usually 8-8.5 percent for a winner and 4-5 percent for a placed finish. Therefore, riding a Grand National winner is worth around an additional £45,000 to the jockey.
