Grand National 2022: Pete Price screams 'I'm not a lizard' at Aintree on Ladies' Day

Liverpool legend Pete Price has arrived at Ladies' Day at Aintree and has been joking with racegoers about his infamous nickname.

The Radio City presenter often attends the Grand National, and this year he saw it as an opportunity to give a subtle nod to his nickname. The 76-year-old chooses to see the funny side after years of being called a "lizard".

Pete has previously told the ECHO : "Can I establish right now, I am not a reptile and there’s no history of reptiles in the family". He also said it is shouted at him daily when he walks through the city centre.

Once, he said, on a low budget airline, a stewardess announced "Ladies and gentlemen, the lizard’s on board". Passengers cheered and Pete said he was mobbed for selfies.

Pete has previously explained how the nickname came about. He said: "It all started when I tried to get a guest called David Icke on the show.

"He's famous for thinking that the royal family are reptiles disguised as humans - but every time we tried to get him on my show he would cancel at the last minute and we could never manage it. Then we got a phone call from what seemed like a normal caller, and mid-sentence he just started saying 'Pete you're a lizard' and said that's why David Icke wouldn't come on the show."

Pete has even dressed as a lizard in the past, though he opted for a simple yet stylish suit at Aintree. In a subtle nod to his nickname, though, he adorned his jacket with a lizard brooch.

Speaking to ECHO reporter Jess Flaherty, he said: "I'm just wearing a suit, I'm not in for the fashion at my age. I'm just here enjoying it, getting a feel of the place. It's great to be back at Aintree, it's great to see people happy.

"It's great to see those outfits, I am so thrilled to be at Aintree. There are some stunning beautiful women here today. I wish I was a heterosexual just for one day."

Chatting to some racegoers, Pete made it clear he was "not a lizard". One reveller, Liam Moss, shared a video of the radio DJ joined by a group of lads at the races.

Pete can be heard saying: "Right, I repeat: I am not a lizard!". The group surrounding him then cheers.
