Grand National 2022 final 40 runners and riders confirmed at Aintree

Last year's winner Minella Times heads the final 40 runners for today's 2022 Randox Grand National at Aintree Racecourse.

Henry De Bromhead's Minella Times carries top weight of 11st 10lb – 15lb higher in the handicap than last year – as he bids to become the ninth dual winner of the world's greatest steeplechase having helped Rachael Blackmore become the first female jockey to win the race 12 months ago.

The nine-year-old, owned by JP McManus, is now favourite – was as low as 7-1 with some bookmakers but is currently a best-priced 10-1 with Unibet this morning.

Gordon Elliott's recent Cheltenham winner Delta Work – and the well-backed Becher Chase heroine and 'mum' Snow Leopardess will also line-up at Aintree and are both 11-1 chances with some bookmakers.

Cullentra House handler Elliott – who won the National with Silver Birch (2007) and dual winner Tiger Roll (2018, 2019) – has seven of the 40 entries this time and several are near the head of the betting.

Elliott's Delta Work – who beat dual National hero Tiger Roll on his final career start in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at last month's Cheltenham Festival – is currently his leading runner in the market. Stable-mate Escaria Ten, who was narrowly beaten by Any Second Now in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, is a best-priced 20-1 with William Hill.

Run Wild Fred, runner-up to fellow National entrant Freewheelin Dylan (66-1, bet365) in the Irish Grand National last April, is among Elliott's entrants. Another, Run Wild Fred, is 18-1 with bet365 and will be ridden by Davy Russell, who partnered Tiger Roll to his two Grand National victories in 2018 and 2019.

Partly due to her back story, Charlie Longsdon's mare Snow Leopardess has been well-backed and is now just 11-1 with Betfred and Ted Walsh's recent Bobbyjo Chase winner and last year's third home Any Second Now is the same price with bet365, Betfred and BetVictor.

Longsdon's 10-year-old appears set to be the 'once-a-year punters' pick' as she is the only mother in the race – and the first in more than a century – having had a foal to 2006 Derby winner Sir Percy in 2020. She also has some compelling form having won the Becher Chase over the big Aintree obstacles in December, the second of three straight victories this season. Snow Leopardess also has a low weight of just 10st9lb to carry.

She is the leading UK-based horse in the betting, with the markets dominated by Irish-trained horses. Irish trainers saddled the first five home last year and have won four of the past five runnings.

But Emma Lavelle's Eclair Surf, who only made the cut for the race at the final declaration stage, is 14-1 with Coral, bet365 and BetVictor. The eight-year-old won Warwick's Classic Chase in January and was second in the Eider Chase at Newcastle, run over a similar marathon trip to the Grand National.

Another Brit, Colin Tizzard's Fiddlerontheroof – second in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in November – is also high in the bookmakers' lists. He is a general 16-1 chance.

Another Irish runner near the head of the betting is Ciaran Murphy's Enjoy D'allen – one of five runners for McManus after being bought recently by the powerful owner. He is 16-1 with Coral. While Longhouse Poet – from the Martin Brassil's County Kildare stable who won the National with Numbersixvalverde in 2006 – is 18-1 with Betfred.
