Grand National 2022: 92 entries remain for Aintree showpiece as Tiger Roll taken out

Last year's historic winner Minella Times is still on course for the 2022 Randox Grand National at Aintree Racecourse - but dual winner Tiger Roll was taken out at the latest scratchings' stage.

There are now 92 entries remaining for the Aintree showpiece on April 9 after 14 horses were taken out including, as expected the Gordon Elliott-trained Tiger Roll - who won the race in 2018 and 2019.

His Gigginstown House Stud owners were unhappy with the weight he was handed last month and the now 12-year-old will head to the Cheltenham Festival next month for possibly his final race as he bids for a sixth win at the meeting in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase.

Cullentra House handler Elliott – who won the Grand National with Silver Birch (2007) and dual winner Tiger Roll (2018, 2019) – still has the most entries of any trainer this year with 17 left in.

His Conflated and Galvin both head the weights on 11st10lb and are a best-priced 80-1 and 33-1 respectively with Unibet. Those big prices reflect the fact they have the Cheltenham Gold Cup as their main target and won't be confirmed runners at Aintree until after.

Henry De Bromhead's nine-year-old Minella Times was partnered by Rachael Blackmore when scoring at Aintree last April – as the Tipperary-born rider became the first female jockey to win the world's greatest steeplechase.

He is set to carry 11st4lb in his bid for a repeat at the famous Liverpool track and is a best-priced 40-1 with Unibet.

The current favourite is last year's third - Ted Walsh's Any Second Now - who is now a best-priced 12-1 with William Hill and bet365 following his narrow victory in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse last Saturday.

Among the remaining entries is Kim Bailey's Two For Gold, who will head straight to Aintree following his recent second to Fakir D'Oudairies in the Grade One Ascot Chase.

Trainer Kim Bailey, who won the National with Mr Frisk in 1990, is hoping Two For Gold can line-up in the world's greatest steeplechase.

The nine-year-old was beaten a length and three-quarters in the 2m5f contest at Aintree.

Although he previously unseated David Bass after the Canal Turn in the Topham Chase run over the National fences last April, connections believe he can go well in the big one if he gets his right ground conditions.

Two For Gold will carry 10st11lb and is a best-priced 40-1 with most bookmakers.

Bailey said: "He got quite tired at Ascot. He gave his all and he had a hard race.

"I spoke to the owners this morning and the plan is to go to the National and we will see what the ground is. If it was soft ground, he will probably run, if it is not, he won't.

"We don't really have a back-up plan, because he has done what he can do this season and he is ground-related, he wants soft ground."

Bailey added "That was a phenomenal performance at Ascot. I was watching from Sri Lanka and I could not believe it.

"He was 25-1 and thought he would be lucky to be third or fourth, but he looked like he was going to win at the second last, which was more than I expected.

"He has kept on improving all season. He ran a good race at Lingfield when landing the Fleur de Lys Chase and he has kept on improving with every single run.

"The National is a possibility. I worked for Fred Rimell and he always felt that a good National Horse wants two and a half miles and he does that very comfortably."

There are still 45 of the 92 entries trained in Ireland. Ireland have won four of the last five runnings of the Grand National and had the first five horses in last year's renewal.

Fourth home last year was Burrows Saint, who is one of eight entries for the Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins who won the Grand National with Hedgehunter in 2005.

Burrows Saint is a 25-1 chance with William Hill and bet365 abd was third behind Any Second Now and another Grand National entrant Escaria Ten in the Bobbyjo Chase at the weekend.

Escaria Ten, another Irish raider from the Elliott stable, is also vying for favouritism at 14-1.

A maximum 40 runners will go to post at Aintree on April 9 and currently Ciaran Murphy's Enjoy D'Allen is the 40th horse on the list of 92 entries.

He is also a best-priced 14-1 with most bookmakers.
