Grand National 2021 weather and going as watering continues at Aintree Racecourse

Watering continues at Aintree ahead of the 2021 Grand National meeting, which begins on Thursday.

With the weather predominantly dry in the build-up, extra moisture has been required to keep the track in a suitable condition.

The going on the Grand National course is Good to Soft, while the Mildmay and Hurdle tracks are Good to Soft, Good in places.

On Wednesday and Thursday of last week, ten millimetres of irrigation was applied to the Mildmay and hurdle courses and six millimetres went on the Grand National turf.

A further five millimetres was added to the Mildmay and Hurdle courses on Monday and six millimetres to the Grand National track.

Watering was also required on Tuesday.

Aintree’s clerk of the course Sulekha Varma said: “Aintree is looking in great shape on the eve of the Randox Grand National Festival.

“Watering is continuing on the Mildmay and Hurdle Courses and we will assess later today whether the Grand National Course requires any additional watering.”

The forecast is for cold conditions with morning grass frosts.

Some light showers, up to two millimetres, may fall overnight (0-2 millimetres) and in the early hours of Thursday.

Friday and Saturday are expected to be cloudy, with the chance of some sleety showers on the day of the Randox Grand National.
