Grand National 2020 coronavirus decision due soon whether to go ahead or cancel

Fans are waiting to hear whether the 2020 Grand National will go ahead as planned during the coronavirus outbreak.

The big race is due to take place on April 4, when Tiger Roll could try and win it for the third time.

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) will soon be running race meetings without crowds in attendance.

Their officials have been in discussion with the government over Aintree's fixture, it was announced yesterday.

Monday’s race meeting at Kelso is the first card to be run behind closed doors, following guidance from the Scottish government.

Strict procedures will be observed to minimise the health risks for jockeys, trainers, racecourse staff, stable grooms and officials.

By the end of the week, the BHA expects race meetings here to follow the same protocol, initially until the end of March.

Aintree's three-day Grand National meeting is due to start on April 2.

BHA Chief Executive Nick Rust, said: "Racing has worked hard to look after our customers and our staff by following the government’s guidance and taking proportionate action.

“We will agree plans to limit attendance to participants and staff only at race meetings from this week and put in place the contingency plans developed by the industry.”

Details of contingency plans have been shared with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The BHA added that the UK government has been briefed on the issues involved in staging the Randox Health Grand National.

The Cheltenham Festival took place as scheduled last week and all meetings in Britain over the weekend went ahead as planned.

More than 150,000 people usually attend Aintree's Grand National meeting, first run in 1839.
