Rathvinden wins Grand National 2019 in ITV special - but all is not what it seems

13 may be unlucky for some.

But for Ruby Walsh and trainer Willie Mullins their luck could well be in with 9/1 shot Rathvinden in the Grand National.

Irish jockey Walsh has gone 14 years without a National triumph at Aintree.

But the two-time winner, who steered Papillon and Hedgehunter to victory in 2000 and 2005 respectively, will be hoping No.13 Rathvinden can break his hoodoo.

And if ITV’s virtual race is anything to go by, the legendary 39-year-old will be celebrating a historic third win this evening.

Grand National 2019 prize money revealed: Over £1MILLION up for grabs

Last year’s winner Tiger Roll is the favourite ahead of the signature 5.15pm race.

Rathvinden is well fancied, however, beating Alpha Des Obeaux on his latest outing in February.

In 19 races, the 11-year-old horse has provided 9 wins and 13 places - making it good value going into the National.

To get punters excited before today’s big race, ITV screened the virtual Grand National.

In an exciting race, that saw only four horses unseated, 5-1 Tiger Roll was beaten to the winning posts by Rathvinden.

Gordon Elliott’s 16/1 outsider Jury Duty finished in third with 12/1 shot Anibale Fly behind in fourth.

The Virtual Grand National correctly predicted Tiger Roll to win last year, whilst it tipped Cause of Causes, who eventually finished second, the previous year.
