Grand Canyon University, the largest Christian university in the United States, is currently facing legal challenges from two separate agencies under the Biden administration. Following a fine imposed by the Department of Education in October, amounting to nearly $38 million, the university is now being sued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for deceptive advertising and illegal telemarketing.
Grand Canyon University's president, Brian Mueller, vehemently denies these allegations. Mueller points out that the university was able to revitalize itself from near bankruptcy 15 years ago, growing to accommodate 26,000 students on campus and 92,000 students engaged in online and hybrid programs. He further emphasizes that the university's success stems from its commitment to the free market system and the integration of a Christian worldview.
The allegations brought by the FTC specifically involve illegal telemarketing and deceptive advertising practices. However, Mueller adamantly refutes these claims, asserting that the university has been transparent in its operations and prides itself as a leader in transparency for students. He also notes that Grand Canyon University has not raised tuition in 15 years, resulting in lower student debt levels and extremely low default rates. Mueller argues that the investigations and resulting fines are attempts to hinder the university's progress rather than address genuine concerns in higher education.
In addition to the lawsuit filed by the FTC, Grand Canyon University is also contending with allegations from the Department of Education. The department claims that the university provided misleading information about the costs of its doctoral programs and other related matters. Mueller dismisses these accusations as baseless. He points out that the doctoral program is actually the smallest of the university's offerings, and it would be nonsensical to deceive students in order to drive revenue when the institution has experienced financial success and stability.
Feeling targeted by these legal actions, Mueller highlights that Liberty University, another prominent Christian university, is also facing significant fines. He suggests that a notable ideological disagreement may be at play, given the universities' success and the high demand for what they offer. Mueller asserts that Grand Canyon University has never been more popular, with a surge in nationwide interest and student enrollment that exceeds the capacity of their current facilities.
