Gran inspired by Captain Tom Moore doing 100th birthday walk to fundraise for NHS

A 99-year-old great grandma inspired by Captain Tom Moore is walking 100 lengths of her driveway before her 100th birthday to raise money for an NHS charity.

Win Page, of Middleton, Greater Manchester, plans to do 10 lengths of her drive every day until her 100th birthday on April 28.

She said her inspiration was Captain Tom Moore - the 99-year-old army veteran who has now raised more than £25m for NHS Charities Together by completing 100 laps of his garden.

Mrs Page said they are only two days apart in age - so if he can do it, so can she.

And she's already raised more than £3,500 for the North West Ambulance Service charity.

She told the Manchester Evening News : "Captain Tom has been such an inspiration.

"He's actually two days younger than me, so I thought if he can do it so can I.

"The NHS has been so good to me all my life and I wanted to give something back.

"Everyone has been so helpful. Without the good team I've got around me I couldn't have done it.

"Honest to goodness I didn't expect to raise this much money. It took my breath away."

Mrs Page, who ran a bakery alongside her late husband in their hometown all her working life, was going to have a big birthday party with family and friends before the coronavirus lockdown scuppered her plans.

But she says taking part in the charity challenge has helped her stay connected with her loved ones and make up for the disappointment.

Mrs Page said: "I was very disappointed to not have a birthday party.

"My family is scattered all over the country and we were all going to come together for it.

"But this has made up for it.

"I feel really connected with everyone."

Mrs Page's grandson James Bradbury, 39, added: "She's unbelievable, she really is.

"It's typical of her to want to help.

"We're all unbelievably proud of her."
