Gran forced to pay £1,000 to take one extra suitcase on a holiday flight

A gran was forced to pay £1,000 to take one extra suitcase on a holiday flight.

Olga Fonseca’s bag charge cost her more than the £800 she had paid for her return ticket to Mozambique with Qatar Airways.

The hospital cleaning boss was travelling with a niece and grand-daughter from Gatwick and had paid £2,400 for all three flights.

On top of the three 30kg bags allowed, she had packed three more with gifts and “essentials” for family in Africa – expecting to pay about £100 extra per bag.

But at check-in she was told the total would be more than £3,000.

Stunned Olga had to “condense” the three bags into one, leaving her brother to take the rest home.

She also had to borrow from him to pay the £1,000 charge for it.

Olga, 57, of South London, fumed: “I had nothing left to enjoy my holiday with. I was in tears on the plane.”

Her daughter Nadia Ossmane, 31, said: “She’s regularly taken supplies and clothes for siblings home on other flights. It’s never more than £100.”

The gran says the luxury airline told her charges were higher because she had booked through a travel agency.

Nadia added: “My mum paid a lot for those tickets and they tried to bleed her dry and left her completely humiliated.”

Qatar Airways said it is reviewing what happened and she would hear an update shortly.
