Gran fears romantic gesture to find holiday fling 'Steve from Leicester' has backfired

Some great love stories have emerged from holiday flings.

However, with each day that passes by, it looks like this is becoming unlikely for Katie Jones - despite a brave public appeal.

While on holiday in Benidorm, the British grandmother met 66-year-old named Steve from Leicester whom she described as looking like British actor Tim Roth.

The two met each other by chance on the beach and got chatting, then went for a paddle. They later went for a drink with Steve's holiday companions - a man called Clive and woman named Jo.

Steve took Katie's number and later left for dinner with his friends,  Leicestershire Live reported.

By chance the next day, the pair bumped into each other at the bar.

She said: "His friends left after a while and asked me to take care of him and we just talked and I felt like I’d known him for years.

"We just clicked. I’m an old lady and you don’t expect that sort of chemistry with someone else ever again.”

Steve admitted he had lost her phone number but unfortunately Katie forgot to give it to him again before they parted ways for the last time.

"We kissed goodbye – just a peck – and I never saw him again."

Katie, from Oswestry, Shropshire, is visiting Leicester in April as part of her  volunteering for the RAF and put out a heartfelt appeal for Steve to come forward to see if then chemistry was still there.

Unfortunately, Steve has not been in touch - despite Katie's brave move - and she believes she won't hear from him now.

She told LeicestershireLive : "I never expect to hear from him again, even if I might have done, I don't think I will now."

Regardless, she adds, "I think those hours were special, I still think they were special."

"I wish I could go back and turn the clock back.

"It was special - it wasn't me seeing him across the room, him seeing me and having a quick grope, it wasn't like that," she explained.

"It was two adults having a talk and an intimate conversation that meant something to both of them, and it was really sweet sitting holding his hand like I'd known him for longer.

"I feel really sad, that sort of thing never happens. I never expected to feel that special again - at my age you don't. I have been on my own for a long time and feeling what I felt with Steve was wow - I never expected that."

Katie does worry that the public nature of her romantic gesture might have embarrassed Steve.

"I do feel for other people, my feelings are all for him and his friends. I can handle it, I am concerned for him.

"I wouldn't ask him to get in touch, I would love to go back but I don't think I could ask him to get in touch. I would be too anxious."

As for finding a similar spark with someone else in the future, Katie isn't sure.

"That connection doesn't come from swiping on a hand-held, it doesn't come from a picture on Match.com.

"It comes from seeing in someone what they see in you, it's seeing the reflection in someone's eyes, it's that connection between two people when they are in the right place at the right time."
