Gran 'disgusted' with treatment at local hospital after being sent home with broken hip

A grandmother has hit out at her local hospital after medics failed to correctly diagnose she had broken her hip and sent her home with some painkillers.

Joy Gray, 61, from Eccles, said she was also not given an X-ray when she visited Salford Royal A&E on August 12, three days after falling badly on her hip. She was told it was a minor injury after waiting eight hours to see a doctor.

The former nursery nurse who had an aneurism five years ago, which left her in a coma for two weeks and partially paralysed down her left side, says she was told her hip was just bruised. She continued with her life and carried on walking about, putting weight on her hip, reports the Manchester Evening News.

But she says she was in so much pain that on August 31 she attended Oldham Royal Hospital. And after being X-rayed was informed her hip was broken and she would require a full hip replacement.

She said: “The surgeon told me I had a bad break and had further damaged it by walking on it. They said if I had been X-rayed first it could have repaired.”

Joy, who has two young grandsons, said she had a full hip operation on September 5. She admitted she is angry that she had to endure a serious operation, when a simple X-ray would have meant she could have avoided it.

She went on: “I am disgusted with Salford Royal Hospital. I have been in agony and I wish they had X-rayed me at the time, but we just believe them don’t we?”

Her daughter, Rachel, 29, a beauty therapist said: “I am really unhappy with Salford Royal’s treatment of my mum. She was there for eight hours, when she is already disabled.

“They should have done more to investigate. And they should definitely have taken an X-ray.”

Pete Turkington, chief officer for Salford Care Organisation said: “We are aware of the concerns raised by Ms Gray and we are working alongside her to understand more about these and any learning that can be identified.”
