Gran disgusted by vibrator shoved in letterbox as neighbour cleared in court

A gran last night told of her disgust after a purple vibrator was posted through the letterbox of her home.

Dorothy Urquhart, 73, made the discovery and said the sex aid “wasn’t very clean” and had “stuff on it”.

Yesterday at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, her neighbour Jennifer Raeside, 33, was cleared of putting it through the pensioner’s letterbox.

The prosecutor dropped the case mid-trial after it emerged the seven-inch vibrator wasn’t in court to be produced in evidence.

Speaking to the Record afterwards, Dorothy said: “It was a horrible thing to discover in your home. I’m bitterly disappointed about what happened in court.”

Dorothy told the trial how she bought her ground floor flat in Leven, Fife, in August 2018.

She said the relationship with upstairs neighbour Raeside was initially “good”. But it soured, with accusations Raeside was noisy.

The trial heard the vibrator was posted through Dorothy’s letterbox on March 31 last year.

She told the court: “I didn’t know what it was, so I phoned my son. He came round and we phoned the police.

“When I was told what it was, it did upset me.”

Dorothy, a retired telephone assistant, had installed CCTV cameras outside her front door and elsewhere following previous disturbances.

Footage was shown in court of Raeside coming downstairs to the ground floor.

Solicitor Dewar Spence, defending Raeside, put it to Dorothy that his client had taken an “item” out to bins at the rear of the flats.

He suggested “someone else put it through the letterbox”.

Police took it into evidence.

Mr Roy called the officer who interviewed Dorothy to give evidence.

But the prosecutor was unable to ask direct questions about the vibrator for legal reasons as it wasn’t being produced in evidence.

He then informed Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist there would be no further proceedings in the trial.

The Sheriff found Raeside not guilty.

She had been accused of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person fear or alarm by posting a sex aid through the letterbox.

Raeside had denied the charge.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman last night said the vibrator was still in their possession.

Raeside declined to comment.

A Crown Office spokeswoman said they were still examining the matter and couldn’t respond last night.
