Gran clings to toddler, 3, 70ft above ground after she slipped through balcony railings

A quick-thinking gran jumped to the rescue after her toddler granddaughter was almost fell from a balcony 70ft above the ground.

The grandmother rushed to hold her the little girl's arms and stopped her from falling off the seventh floor at the residential building in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province in east China.

Shocked residents captured the dramatic rescue on their mobile phones as they called for emergency services on Friday morning.

The unnamed gran was left holding the child before firefighters came to lift her to safety.

One firefighter is seen abseiling from the top of the building and standing on the metal grille on the sixth floor before lifting the girl up from below.

Other firefighters try to remove the metal bars in a bid to free the girl.

They eventually manage to take the girl back inside the apartment

According to New Beijing Post, the grandmother was busy cooking in the kitchen and did not realise her granddaughter had crawled from bed to the balcony.

The girl was taken to hospital where she was found unharmed.

The gran said: "I was here, and she climbed out by herself.

"I had no idea until I noticed she wasn't making any noise.

"I turned around and saw her dangling there. It gave me the fright of my life."
