Wildfires have ripped through large parts of Gran Canaria, sparking mass evacuations.

Shocking footage shows flames rip through forests on the holiday island are firefighters battled overnight in a bid to contain the blaze.

The wildfire, which began in the Artenara area, has since spread to 900 hectares - sparking the evacuation of around 1000 people.

It's been reported that the blaze was started by a welder using a soldering iron at a house and that a 55-year-old man has been arrested by the Civil Guard.

A number of planes and helicopter crews have been called in to drop water on the impacted areas in a bid to extinguish the fire - which is around 20 miles from the capital Las Palmas.

The Island's council tweeted : "It [the fire] affects the municipalities of Tejeda, Artenara and Gáldar.

"As a preventive measure, residents of a dozen neighborhoods near the fire are being evacuated to municipal facilities and to the shelter for the night."

Determined firefighters have continued non-stop to put out the fire before it spreads any further.

Posting a video from the heart of the blaze, they wrote: "So we are right now firefighters Gran Canaria, overwhelmed by the situation.

"We keep working and fighting for our island!"

Witness Carla Rodriguez described the scene as "one of the most painful images I've seen in my life".

Rodriguez was heading to Juncalillo with some friends for a local festival.

"The first time I saw the fire we were reaching the diversion to Juncalillo and I realised how close it was. I did not expect it, since I had read that it was under control in different areas," Rodriguez told Reuters.

"But after the party, when we returned, we decided to look again to see how much the fire had progressed and seeing it out of control was devastating. The tears came out since I love nature and seeing it burn that way was quite worrying."
