Gran branded 'evil' for refusing to invite daughter's stepson to birthday party because 'he isn't family'

A mum has been left upset after her own mother refused to invite her stepson to her family birthday party because "he isn't family".

The woman says she has been with the boy's father - her husband - since he was three-years-old and brought him up since he was nine, after his mother died.

The boy is now 17-years-old and the woman says she loves him and treats him like he is her own son.

However not everyone in her family feels the same.

Taking to Mumsnet to ask for advice the woman revealed her mother is having a birthday party soon but is refusing to invite the teenager .

She said: "DSS (Darling StepSon) is 17, I've been in his life since he was 3, and he's lived with us since he was 9 as his mum passed away.

"Me and DH (Darling Husband) also have a 10 year old together but I treat DSS as my own and I love and care about him as if he was my own.

"It's my mums birthday in a few weeks, and she's having a small family party, she invited me, DH and DS (Darling Son), when I asked her about DSS she said well he isn't family, and that he wouldn't care that much.

"WIBU (Would I BE Unreasonable) not to go if she hasn't invited DSS, as I don't want him to feel left out?"

Mumsnet users replied in their droves slamming the grandmother's behaviour as 'horrific' and 'evil'.

One said: "That’s horrific. I wouldn’t dream of going without him and I’d tell her in no uncertain terms that he is family and if she pushes a choice between him and her, she will lose out. What an evil cow."

Another agreed: "I'm absolutely horrified, how awful. I hope your dss never finds out, unspeakably cruel and hurtful."

"Please stand up for your stepson here and don't go. Your mum's attitude is disgusting," added another.

A fourth said: "That's really spiteful given the circumstances of his mum passing and him living with you for almost half his life. Does he still have good relations with his mams side of the family."
