Gran becomes the oldest woman to run from John O’Groats to Land’s End

Agonising shin splints could not stop this gran becoming the oldest woman to run from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Fuelled by porridge, bacon and egg sandwiches and high-protein meals, Angela White completed the 874-mile journey in 18 days, 10 hours and three minutes.

The grandmother-of-two said coping with two injured shins was her biggest challenge.

She said: “It was so painful. At one point I didn’t think I would be able to complete the event.”

Keen runner Angela, of Kendal, Cumbria, said: “I have proven that age is just a number. You are never too old to set a new goal.

"Training for anything is hard especially getting your body in the best condition for a challenge.

"No one knows how to train for this. Everyone is different.

"I have been running for seven years, so I have a little bit of knowledge about how my body behaves.

"I normally run offroad but for this event, I had to train on roads so my body could get used to running on tarmac for a long period."

The retired orthopaedic doctor, spent 18 months training for the run. She had 12 crew members helping her at various points from Scotland to Cornwall.

Her partner Joe Bowman, 64, was with her all the way, driving their motor home and getting meals she had pre-cooked ready.

She said: “I’ve been treated like a princess in these last few weeks. If I am emotional about anything, it’s the great support I’ve had.

"He made me a bacon and egg sandwich and cycled to deliver it to me whilst it was still hot.

"Now that is dedication."
