Grammys to close with show by rock supergroup based around Dave Grohl

The Grammy awards will have all-star lineup for their 2014 closing performance, featuring Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham.

"We're incredibly excited about this number," Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich said in a statement via Spin. "There's nothing better than when the Grammys can rock out, and to have these artists all together on one stage, doing a number that, when they presented it to us, knocked us out, is going to turn out to be one of those Grammy moments that people talk about for a long time. Long live Trent, Josh, Dave and Lindsey and these great bands."

The performers are linked by 13-time Grammy winner Grohl, who has featured on QOTSA's Songs for the Deaf and Nine Inch Nails' With Teeth. Buckingham also appears in Sound City: Real to Reel, Dave Grohl's documentary about the legendary studio in Van Nuys, Los Angeles. The show will be the first Grammy performance for Nine Inch Nails and QOTSA, who are touring the US together in March.

The 56th Grammys will also host Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on 26 January at Los Angeles' Staples Center. Daft Punk will make their first televised performance since 2008 , playing with artists including Stevie Wonder and Get Lucky collaborators Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers.

Other artists performing include Jay Z and Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, John Legend, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Keith Urban and Sara Bareilles with Carole King, Kendrick Lamar with Imagine Dragons, Lorde, Metallica with Lang Lang, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Pink with Fun's Nate Ruess, Robin Thicke with Chicago, and country stars Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson with Blake Shelton.
