St Vincent’s Annie Clark has won the best alternative music album award at the Grammys for her 2014 album St Vincent. She edged out Arcade Fire, Alt-J, Cage the Elephant and Jack White to walk away with the award.

This was Clark’s first-ever Grammy nomination and win, for an album that blew critics away. Her collection of synth-laden, bombastic tracks spanned elements of funk, pop and her alt-rock roots, and last year topped the Guardian and NME’s album of 2014 lists. “It seems to have come from a completely different, more intriguing world to most rock music in 2014,” wrote the Guardian’s Alexis Petridis.

Clark spoke of the album as a more relaxed writing effort than its predecessors, in a December 2014 interview with the Guardian. It was her latest solo release since 2011’s Strange Mercy, though Clark collaborated with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne on 2012’s Love This Giant.
