A straightforward guide to grammar that will help you to make yourself understood

Grammar for grown-ups

Book now

The digital revolution means people read – and write – more than ever.
Whether you're composing an email, writing a blog post or putting
together a report, no one wants to be embarrassed, or misunderstood, as a result of simple grammatical errors. This accessible evening course led by Katherine Fry and Rowena Kirton, co-authors of Grammar For Grown-ups, can help anyone overcome their problems with syntax and semantics.

As well as covering the essential basics of grammar and punctuation, Katherine and Rowena also provide an easy-to-follow guide to some more advanced rules that can commonly cause confusion. This informal but informative event will make a real difference to your writing, teaching you the rules you need to remember, and the ones you can safely forget. You will leave feeling more confident to write freely and share your work with the world.

This course is for you if...

  • You struggle to remember the rules of grammar you were taught at school, or simply weren't taught any
  • You want to improve your command of the technical aspects of written English
  • You write reports or emails as part of your job and want to ensure your language is professional and understandable

Course description

This informal course mixes classroom tuition with discussions and
occasional exercises to identify and address the grammatical weak points
of attendees. Topics covered during the event include:

  • A re-introduction to basic grammar
  • Beyond the basics: what you need to know (and what you don't)
  • Punctuation – part one: the easy stuff
  • Punctuation – part two: apostrophes and quotation marks
  • Common spelling mistakes, and rules to remember
  • Divided by a common language: UK English and US English
