Grainger Market Covid-19 restrictions to be relaxed in effort to boost trade

Social-distancing guidelines at the Grainger Market are changing to make it more customer friendly.

From August 8, more entrances and exits will be open and more shoppers will be able to go in at the same time.

Since reopening in June, customers have only been able to use one entrance and numbers have been severely restricted, leading to queues.

Now the capacity is being increased to 1,000 people and all 14 of the historic market's doors will be open.

A strict one-way system around the market will also be made less restrictive, with a "two-way system" being reintroduced for the main walkways.

As with other indoor shopping areas, both customers and traders will need to wear masks at all times.

But this extra level of protection means it's possible to allow more people into the building and for them to move around more freely.

A Newcastle City Council spokesperson said: "As Newcastle continues its cautious recovery from Covid-19, shops and businesses are beginning to open their doors more widely.

"This is vital to kick-start the city’s economy and Newcastle City Council is committed to support these businesses in any way they can."

The spokesperson added the council is "keen to support the market and increase trade where possible" but warned the "situation will be monitored on an ongoing basis to check that social distancing isn’t compromised".
