Graham Rahal pulls off weekend sweep at Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle

Graham Rahal held off Josef Newgarden in a two-lap shoot-out to complete a doubleheader sweep in the Detroit Grand Prix.

Rahal became the first Verizon IndyCar Series driver to sweep a doubleheader at Belle Isle. He also became the first driver to win a doubleheader weekend since Scott Dixon at Toronto in 2013.

Newgarden continued to gain nearly a second a lap on Rahal before in the final laps before a blown turbo on Spencer Pigot's car brought out a red flag on Lap 67. It took 18 minutes to clean up.

Rahal led a total of 41 laps today and a total of 96 of a possible 140 on the weekend. Rahal led 55 laps on Saturday to win his first IndyCar race since last August at Texas.

Team Penske drivers finished second and third. Will Power finished third and Takuma Sato, who started on the pole, finished fourth.

Honda has now won five of the eight races in the IndyCar series, while Chevrolet has won three times.

Rahal got grief from some of his fellow drivers after saying Friday he thought he could a car capable of dominating if it ran up front. He backed up that talk over two full races.
