Graham Potter responds to questions on Tottenham manager position

Graham Potter wafted away whispers linking him with managerless Tottenham and told Brighton to focus on clinching Premier League survival.

The Seagulls will be safe, irrespective of results later in the day, if they win their high-noon date with Wolves at Molineux on Sunday.

Albion chief executive Paul Barber insists they have received no contact from Spurs about headhunting Potter – and nor would Brighton entertain any approach.

Potter maintained a respectful distance from his appearance on Tottenham's shortlist of potential replacements for Jose Mourinho, saying: “Only a few months ago I was fielding questions about whether I had the support of the chairman here.

“In football there's always speculation, both positive and negative, and you have to take these things with a pinch of salt.

“My focus is on doing well here, I feel I have the support of the board, players and staff, we are at an exciting moment in terms of the work we've done, and we want to carry it on.

“We haven't finished anything yet and there's a lot more to do.

"I'm really happy here, so it's nice to hear Paul say those things – but he doesn't have to.”

Potter has steered Brighton's lifeboat ashore despite a catalogue of hard-luck stories and undeserved defeats earlier in the season, but the equation has now boiled down to three points for survival.

He said: “Our motivation is simple – win the game and finish the job ourselves.

“It would give us back-to-back Premier League wins, improve our points tally... we have many reasons to go up there and be as positive as we can and get the job done.

"We are not mathematically safe, we need to carry on fighting, we don't want to rely on anyone else, we want to get the points ourselves and that's where the focus will be at the weekend."
