Graham Potter opens up on Brighton's "pain" after Lee Mason fiasco at West Brom

Graham Potter is determined Brighton respond to “a painful” week after losing 1-0 at West Brom.

The South Coast club arrived at The Hawthorns having lost to arch-rivals Crystal Palace despite having 25 shots.

The Seagulls were once again left cursing as this time Pascal Gross and then sub Danny Welbeck both managed to miss penalties at 1-0 down.

It was the first time in Premier League history a side had put two penalties against the woodwork in the same game.

Either side of the spot-kicks, Lewis Dunk saw referee Lee Mason disallow his quickly-taken free-kick, before giving and then ruling it out again in a four minute meltdown.

Boss Potter, whose side host Leicester next on Saturday, said: “We have played two matches, lost two games and are scratching our heads a little bit.

“It is frustrating but we have to deal with that.

“We can't feel sorry for ourselves, we have to keep fighting.

“We had a painful week.

“But this is football at the highest level and you are going to suffer at times.

“We are suffering at the moment, there is no denying that because we have had a hard week.

“But I believe in the players and we have to respond in the next match.”

Potter must now decide who will take Brighton's next spot-kick as Gross, Welbeck and Neal Maupay have all missed them this term.

Potter added: “You have to back the players on the pitch who feel they can take the penalty.

“Danny has come along with experience and quality and felt he could take it.

“I have no problem with that.“
