Graham Potter makes 'quality' Everton admission as Brighton handed reality check

Graham Potter has admitted that Everton were a step up in quality for his side as they won 2-0 against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

A goal in the first period from Demarai Gray was added to by Dominic Calvert-Lewin's second half penalty to give Rafa Benitez's side an important three points.

The Blues now head into the first international break of the campaign unbeaten under their new boss in all competitions and with seven points from a possible nine in their opening trio of Premier League matches.

Brighton had won both of their previous league games so far this term and came into this fixture with a fair amount of confidence behind them.

However, Potter admitted that this was a step up in class for his side to face.

He told his post-match press conference: "I think we played against a good opponent, you have to give them credit as well.

"We didn't quite hit our normal level. I didn't think we were bad, we just weren't that good.

"When you're not at that level it's hard to take points against Premier League sides, especially good ones. I thought Everton were good today.

"I think Everton were a step up in quality and we didn't play our best, there's always two teams on the pitch so they contribute to that.

"It was a combination of both things I think. I thought Everton played well, they did what they did well."
